Alma LaFrance, a landscape painter using primarily oils, received her early art training at Westfield State College (1956-1960) with Professor Arno Maris. More recently she has participated in workshops and classes featuring both plein air and tonalism.
Artist Statement: “My work consists primarily of working directly from nature, exploring the landscape in the company of a dedicated group of friends. As artists for centuries have found, working out of doors encourages a more impressionistic rather than considered rendering of the subject. The over-all light and air changes rapidly and this affects the shape, tone and color of the subject. Efficiency is the key, and urgency the driving force. The prevailing question is “How can I use the materials at hand to best capture the moment, light and mood this landscape?”
